Since the 2024 reenactment of R.I. Gen. Laws § 6-1, eligible Trade Names (commonly referred to as "DBAs") are required to file an Annual Renewal starting the calendar year after the Trade Name was first registered. Trade Names that were transferred to the RI Department of State from the state's 39 municipalities in 2025 will be required to file their first annual renewal this year between September 1 and November 30. There is no fee to file the required renewal.

An Annual Renewal is a short, simple online filing that captures basic information about a Trade Name. Failure to file a free Annual Renewal will result in a Trade Name's Involuntary Cancellation. Notice of the new requirement has been mailed to the last known address of Trade Names eligible for renewal with instructions to complete the online form.
